Smart charging with certainty and results

Electric driving sounds like the future. But what if the grid can’t keep up? Oegema Transport proves this is not a showstopper. With smart energy storage, real-time control and a solid business case, the company charges its e-trucks day and night – independent of grid capacity and energy prices.
About Oegema transport
Oegema Transport is a leading logistics service provider from Dedemsvaart, the Netherlands. Their mission: sustainable operations without compromising reliability and efficiency. As a launch partner of the 'Charging on Solar' concept, Oegema strategically invests in future-proof charging infrastructure for its fast-growing e-truck fleet.

The challenge
More electric driving means more charging. But grid congestion, unpredictable energy prices and the cost of infrastructure make that step anything but simple. Oegema needed a solution that:
- scales with the fleet,
- uses generated solar energy intelligently,
- operates independently of the overloaded grid,
- and delivers a rock-solid business case.
"With Oegema, we prove that with smart energy storage, you can not always charge, but also earn from it. By buying, storing and trading at the right moment, energy becomes profitable asset."

The solution
Together with Zonnegilde, Eneco and ABB, iwell delivered a integrated energy system that turns energy security into daily reality. Oegema now charges its e-trucks using locally generated solar energy, independent of grid congestion or price volatility.
The heart of the system is iwell's Mega Cube Modular:
- 3,225 MWh battery capacity
- 5 MW charging power
- connected to a 3 MWp solar roof
- controlled by iwell's EMS
The EMS continuously balances the energy flows from solar production, batteries and fast chargers (ABB). Through Eneco, the system is also actively deployed on balancing and imbalance markets for additional revenue and maximum utilisation. This makes charging not only reliable, but also profitable.
The system is also fully scalable: Oegema started first with 6 electric trucks, and quickly scaled up to 34 vehicles. Thanks to the smart connection between battery, solar and charging infrastructure, all this can be done with a grid connection of just 1.4 MW.
The smart control also ensures:
- automatic optimisation based on market prices;
- monetisation of Renewable Fuel Units (RFUs);
- real-time control over generation, consumption and energy trading.
The result: control over energy, predictable costs and a sustainable investment that pays for itself quickly.

From design to delivery
The charging solution at Oegema was developed under the leadership of Zonnegilde, which oversaw the project from design to realisation. ABB supplied the fast chargers. Eneco handles energy control and utilizes the system on energy markets. iwell delivered the battery and EMS system, and handled the technical integration between all components – turning a complex setup into one reliable whole.
