How Transdev electrified 5 depots with 55 battery systems
Transdev is one of Europe’s largest mobility providers and a major Dutch busoperator, committed to a zero-emission fleet by 2030. But grid congestion and delayed connections put that ambition, and the daily schedule, at risk: withoutreliable charging, buses don’t leave on time, and missed service carries realfinancial exposure. The question wasn’t whether to electrify, but how to scale itreliably and fast under a constrained grid.
About Transdev
Transdev is one of Europe’s largest mobility providers and a major bus operator in the Netherlands. The company is committed to a zero-emission fleet by 2030. For its depots, that means every electric bus must be charged reliably, every day, regardless of what the grid allows.
The challenge
- Grid congestion and delayed grid connections put the 2030 zero-emission ambition at risk.
- Without reliable charging, buses don’t leave on time and the daily schedule is in danger.
- Missed service carries real financial exposure under the concession.
- Waiting for grid reinforcement was not an option. The fleet had to scale now, within the connection capacity available.
- Reliable charging capacity is also becoming increasingly important for future concessions and tenders. Without certainty about energy availability, you put both operations and future growth at risk.
The solution gives us confidence that the energy we need will be available when our fleet needs it. Most importantly, it brings predictability and peace of mind: buses leave on schedule with the energy they need. Having one party responsible for managing the energy system also simplifies operations significantly.

The solution
iwell delivered storage, software and operation & maintenance as one integrated package under a single point of responsibility. That is why the rollout could move both reliably and fast.
- Modular battery storage: 55 All-in-One (AIO) battery systems across 5 locations, 13 MWh in total. The largest depot, Arnhem, has 20 AIO systems with 4.6 MWh. The modular design means capacity grows with the fleet.
- In-house EMS: the Energy Management System orchestrates charging and discharging against the bus schedules. Peak-shaving algorithms and real-time signaling keep every site within its grid limits.
- Charger integration: the system is integrated with Kempower fast chargers and is charger-agnostic across all major DC brands, including Siemens, Kempower, Ekoenergetika, ABB and Alpitronic.
- Design & delivery: iwell handled system design, installation and commissioning. Arnhem was installed in a single day and energized the next.
- Operation & maintenance: 24/7 monitoring and management, with a single point of accountability for the standard 10-year warranty.

Repeatable, modular model that de-risks electrification
Buses now depart fully charged and on schedule every day, with high uptime and concession commitments are met without grid overruns or the penalties that come with them.
For the depot in Arnhem, 60 buses charge day and night on our EMS and battery system - unlocking more than 3,000 kilowatts of power from a connection that only allows 1,700. Charging happens at the lowest possible kWh price, independent of external grid developments.
This shows a repeatable, modular model that de-risks fleet electrification for any operator scaling across Europe.
