About Horizon Flower Family

Horizon Flower Family specialises in the cultivation and breeding of tulips and tulip bulbs. The company farms 180 hectares of land and operates 5,000 solar panels, generating nearly 2.5 million kWh per year. Their ambition: to grow and become more sustainable without being dependent on unpredictable energy rates or a strained grid connection.

"We have 5,000 solar panels on our roof. These generate just under 2.5 million kilowatts per year. However, the sun doesn't always shine at the exact moment we need that power. With the EMS and the battery, we can buffer that energy locally and use it in the evening to make our production both sustainable and cost-effective."

The Solution

Horizon Flower currently operates a 1,750 kW / 4,300 kWh battery system, controlled by the Energy Management System (EMS). This system automatically manages the power flow:

Smart energy trading via the day-ahead market: Buying when prices are low; using or storing when prices are high.
Maximising solar energy: Optimising the use of their own generation and shaving off peak loads.
Energy and operational security: The battery provides a reliable power supply for the greenhouses, LED lighting, cold stores, and sorting machines.
Future potential: Generating additional revenue via the imbalance market by contributing to national grid balancing.
