E. van Wijk decarbonises in a grid-congested area

E. van Wijk Group, an international logistics company with 75+ years of experience, keeps innovating in a market full of challenges. The company is committed to decarbonisation, investing in sustainably charged e-trucks, batteries, and solar. Not exactly trivial when the Giessen site is hit hard by grid congestion.

About E. Van Wijk

E. van Wijk Logistics is a leading logistics provider with locations in the Netherlands and beyond. Their mission: take the load off customers with smart, reliable, and sustainable logistics solutions. As a pioneer in innovative transport concepts, E. van Wijk invests deliberately in future-proof infrastructure and a modern fleet, ready for tomorrow’s logistics.

The challenge

Switching to electric mobility is a logical step for E. van Wijk. Reality, however, got in the way. The Giessen location faces heavy grid congestion, making it impossible to secure the required charging capacity through the conventional grid. At the same time, the company wants to meet client and regulatory requirements and turn its green ambitions into action. Key challenges:

  • an overburdened local grid that blocks expansion,

  • high energy demand from electric trucks,

  • the need to use all on-site solar locally,

  • preparing for zero-emission zones and future-proof logistics.

"The energy transition will change the core of our company. Energy and energy management will become an increasingly important part of our transport business."

The solution

Together with Zonnegilde and iwell, E. van Wijk implemented an integrated energy system that makes electric trucking viable today. With 2,800 solar panels and a smart battery system, clean energy is generated on site, stored, and used at the right moment to charge e-trucks. The system at a glance:

  • 2,800 solar panels (≈ 1,412 MWh per year),

  • an iwell smart battery system (BESS) with 1 MW power and 4.3 MWh storage capacity,

  • direct control of fast chargers and PV via iwell’s Energy Management System (EMS),

  • monitoring and optimisation of the grid connection.

The EMS orchestrates energy flows intelligently: it stores solar energy and deploys it precisely when charging demand peaks. The result: e-trucks charge sustainably, reliably, and without leaning on an already overfull grid. With this setup, E. van Wijk can:

  • guarantee charging of e-trucks with its own solar power,

  • lower energy costs by maximising locally generated electricity,

  • get ahead of upcoming zero-emission requirements,

  • use energy management as a new strategic lever in the business.

Positioned for a greener future

Ewout van Wijk (CEO, E. van Wijk Group) is opting for a smart, innovative approach. Instead of waiting for circumstances to force change, he’s already building all-electric business models. At iwell, we’re proud to support E. van Wijk Group on that journey.
