Smart storage solutions for Belgium’s next-generation distribution centers
With a combined storage capacity of 16.7 MWh, iwell and Montea are realizing the largest battery project in the EU. The six battery systems are located next to large distribution centers in Belgium. Thanks to smart energy management, they reduce dependence on the grid, lower energy costs, and maximize the use of local solar energy.
Over Montea
Montea develops and invests heavily in future-proof logistics real estate in Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and Germany. Major international clients such as Amazon and DHL rely on Montea for sustainable distribution centers that are ready for the future. Innovation and sustainability are always central to their business.

The challenge
The logistical sector faces major challenges: grid congestion, rising energy prices, and stricter sustainability targets. Montea wants to remain a leader by using its own energy smartly and drastically reducing CO₂ emissions.
The main challenges are:
-
very limited grid capacity around large distribution centers,
-
a mismatch between solar generation and peak consumption,
-
price volatility and unpredictable energy costs,
-
the wish to translate ESG targets into concrete projects.
“We are proud to support Montea’s sustainable vision with our technology. Our self-learning software not only helps achieve their ESG goals, but also builds a robust and future-proof energy model.”

The solution
Together with Montea, iwell has installed a total of six battery systems with a combined capacity of 16.7 MWh. iwell's energy management system (EMS) ensures that each location makes optimal use of locally generated solar energy, without being dependent on the grid or suffering from feed-in restrictions.
In concrete terms, this means:
- installation of six BESS systems (battery energy storage systems),
- smart energy control via iwell's energy management system,
- maximum utilization of solar energy for own consumption,
- better protection against price fluctuations and grid congestion,
- creation of additional income through grid balancing and energy trading.

A new standard for sustainable logistics
With these six projects, Montea is setting a new standard for sustainable logistics in Belgium. By combining smart battery storage with an advanced EMS, Montea can maximize the use of its own sustainable energy, handle peaks in demand, and operate more independently from the increasingly congested electricity grid. The result: distribution centers that are not only ready for today's energy demands, but also for tomorrow's challenges.
